Home sweet home

Yeah! I am finally home after the 3 days 2 nights camp at camp Christine. Although the camp is really fun, there is still nowhere like home. I really miss my soft bed and also my computer. In fact, I slept almost the whole day upon reaching home around noon.

Ok. Now onto the details of the camp itself. To be honest, I had really expected it to be an extremely boring one but it had turned out to be so interesting and fun.

Day 1
We reached the camp around 11.30 am in the morning and settled down. Lunch were cooked by our own people and I was of course nowhere involved in cooking. I can eat but sorry, I can’t cook. Anyway we had Bee Hoon and eggs for lunch and it wasn’t really that bad honestly.

In the afternoon we had a briefing from Siva and the schedule of the camp. After that, we were taught how to play cricket. Before that day, I had no knowledge at all how cricket is played. I only knew that it’s a national sport in India and looks a bit like baseball. Before we knew it, most of us were hooked on the game. Trust me, its really fun. We had some kick-abouts with the soccer ball one of the guys’ have brought along until it started to rain to stop our fun.

Siva cooked curry chicken for dinner for all of us and it was simply delicious. The whole pot was finished within 20 min and most of us were left wanting more. We were left to relax and bath for the next hour or so. At 8 pm, we were asked to gather and had a singing session. We were given an Indian song and in fact, we had to learn it and perform in front of the people in India. God bless me. Luckily, the song was pretty catchy and all of us picked up quite fast. We played some games before retiring into the night.

Day 2
We have to wake up by 9 o clock in the morning and spent the next hour washing up and having our breakfast. Then it was down to serious work. We had to brain storm and think of the things to bring over and set down ground rules while we were at India. We then had a game of cricket against the new boys that came in this morning. We were lucky to win it thanks to David Francis’s 6 point clinch. Lunch was pasta and me and 4 other jokers were in charge of washing the plates after that.

In the late afternoon, we set of for arguably the event of the camp and that is canoeing. I paired up with David Francis who was reluctant to go with us. I had to urge him and promised to partner him before he agreed reluctantly. It was not as smooth sailing as it was thought to be. The waves were pretty big and it was difficult to steer on the right path and we kept going off course. After a huge detour, we reached the opposite island finally in around 45 minutes. By then, I was truly exhausted and suffered a numbness in the legs.
After a short rest, it was the journey back to the camp. It was easier on the way back as the waves were working in our favor. Although we were damn tired when we got back, we still mustered enough strength to play a 2 sides soccer game as we dried ourselves.

Dinner was BBq and the chicken wings were fantastic. For the next 3 hours we had our dinner and washed up. By 9 o clock, it was yet another brain storming exercise. We had to think of a performance to present to the people in India and there were lots of ideas thrown to the ground to pick from. At around 11, we were free to do our own activities. A small group of us sat in a circle with a lecturer and chatted the night away. It was more of a survivor series. Slowly students began to drop out to sleep and eventually only 3 of us remained with the lecturer. At 7 am, we called it quits and went up for a short nap before we woke up to pack up and leave the place.

It was truly an eventful camp and l learnt quite a lot from it. I didn’t regret going there at all although the mosquitoes there were really a lot. I made some new friends and really had lots of fun with them. I think the India trip on the 12th of Nov will be something to really look forward to.
